Poultry Training in Zambia
Improving the capacity of poultry farmers in the North Western Province of Zambia
The situation
Gorta is assisting rural farmers of the district of Solwezi in Zambia, by supporting the provision of vital training in poultry production. Solwezi is the capital of the North Western Province of Zambia, with approximately 65,000 inhabitants. 67% of the households keep chickens. Chickens are important in the area as they are not only an important source of protein in the local diet but they also provide a source of cash income. However, chickens are mainly kept by households without any particular focus being given to their management. The project proposes to improve poultry production by training four separate groups of participants.
How Gorta is helping
The poultry training is aimed at four groups in the area and will be conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Areas covered will include poultry production; disease identification, prevention and control; poultry building structures; financial and farm management, as well as marketing and processing of poultry products. The four groups targeted encompass the most marginalised members of the community with a strong focus on women, those suffering from disabilities and also a few men. Groups receiving this training will soon be capable of undertaking successful poultry production projects, bringing them a greater return than experienced to date.
