Tackling HIV/AIDS in Tanzania
Essential equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS
The situation
Tanzania is experiencing a generalised AIDS epidemic, with 7% of the sexually active population directly affected. This constitutes not only a health crisis but also a development crisis for the country. In the community in which the Africa Inland Church Tanzania Dispensary operates, vital equipment is necessary in order to allow staff to discover the presence of the HIV virus and to be able to act accordingly.
How Gorta is helping
In Musoma Tanzania, Gorta has assisted the Musoma Dispensary to acquire a ‘CD4 Count Machine’, vital to the early diagnosis and therefore treatment of those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Early diagnosis of HIV infection is crucial for two reasons. This support can go a long way towards reducing the risk of the transmission of the disease to others. It also provides an opportunity to initiate treatment early to prolong survival and improve quality of life.
