Gorta And The United Nations
Gorta, as well as having effectively been established by the Food and
Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, maintains its links
with the UN and is the FAO focal point in Ireland.
Gorta is involved in the distribution of FAO literature, films,
posters, etc. Gorta supports various FAO activities, such as the
World Food Summit. Every year since 1980, on or around the 16th of
October Gorta has hosted World Food Day events in Ireland. World Food
Day is an international day set aside to highlight the plight of
people around the world suffering from hunger and poverty. Host
organisations in every UN affiliated country mark the day with a
variety of events.
